The Creative Arts Theatre was founded in 2013 with a group of drama students who were my guinea pigs for the CSEC Theatre Arts examinations.
After receiving my BA in Theatre, I returned home to Grenada with the highest expectations of teaching Theatre Arts to high school students, who would later further their skills at the T. A. Marryshow Community college. To my surprise Theatre was not being taught at the community college level, but there was a great demand for persons involved in the arts at community events, carnival productions, TV Ads and for plain ole entertainment. After introducing Theatre to the Boca Secondary school's curriculum, I found a renewed passion for teaching. I started with two students, who were so energetic at times that I had to up my game and sometimes my sugar intake. Out of this experiment, I extended the program and reached out to other interested persons who wanted to learn more about performance at the Anglican High School, The Grenada Boys Secondary and Westerhall Secondary School.
In all my years of teaching (I am not that old, by the way), I had never met a group of students with so much energy and love for acting and I found myself spending too much time with children who belonged to other people. They soon became my children and I had to find a home for them. From this speck of love for drama, the Creative Arts Theatre was born.
There was something very special about my students. They had the best excuses when they arrived late to classes or rehearsals, but were always willing to try new things and experimented with improvisations, constructed the most creative costumes and I could ever forget how many times I had to feed them.
Our first production was Master Thief by Telcine Turner, held at the Marryshow House. The play featured Jude Modeste (debut), Kimon Sandy, Anfernee Ettienne, Tracy Lett, Clayton Batson, Kelson Phillip and Gabriel Harris.
The Creative Arts theatre company members have been privileged to work with the three leading Grenadian playwrights in plays and other drama initiatives. Other productions include Monkey see, Monkey do, Tabanca by Christopher DeRiggs, The Miss-Words pageant (performed at the Rex Grenadian hotel), and Monologue Competition in 2015-2016, held at the Grenada Boys Secondary School.
